The pitch

Luminary is the only Mac app that turns the notch into a quiet source of daily inspiration. It runs from the menu bar, and on a schedule you choose, surfaces a handpicked quote over the MacBook's notch — a Dynamic Island for your desktop. Glance, read, get back to work.

Why it's interesting

Apple shipped the notch in 2021 and almost no third-party Mac app has done anything meaningful with it. Luminary is the wedge: a calm, beautifully animated overlay that lives where your screen already has dead pixels. No popups, no banners, no doomscroll loop — just one quote at a time, on your schedule.

About the developer

Luminary is built by Juan Valenzuela, a Lead Compositor and VFX Artist whose work spans blockbuster films and television including Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Alien: Romulus, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and Guardians of the Galaxy. After years working in Nuke, Houdini, and machine-learning pipelines at top studios, he turned to building the small, polished Mac apps he wished existed — tools that feel quiet, considered, and at home on the platform. Luminary is his answer to a simple question: what would the notch look like if it cared about your day?

Press-ready blurbs

"Luminary is the first Mac app that does something genuinely useful with the notch — it turns dead space into a daily moment of reflection."

"A calm, beautifully made indie Mac app. One quote at a time, on your schedule, from a collection you can actually live with."

"$4.99 for unlimited access, no subscriptions, no tracking, no nonsense. The way small Mac apps used to be."
